Strengthening your Strengths

Did you know that focusing on your strengths has a far more beneficial outcome than working on your weaknesses?

In a research study undertaken in 2002 by the Corporate Leadership Council, over 19,000 employees were assessed across 34 organisations world-wide. The study found that:

  • Having a strength focus enhances performance by up to 36.4% (if the strengths are identified correctly, and applied purposefully).

  • Focusing on weaknesses showed a 26.8% decline in performance.

This is a staggering 63% difference in performance outcomes!

When we understand and use our strengths wisely, it has extraordinary positive benefits - not just for our performance for our sense of flourishing too.

In 2019, a group of positive psychologists surveyed a group of workers in New Zealand to assess the impact of their strengths use. They discovered:

  • People who are highly aware of their strengths were 9 times more likely to be flourishing than those who were unaware.

  • People who used their strengths a lot were 18 times more likely to be flourishing

(Hone et al., 2019)

Working with our strengths is energising. As it feels more effortless, we improve faster as we don’t have to think about it. When we perform well, we feel more confident. If we receive positive feedback it can help us feel more motivated and engaged.

Steps to Strengthening Up

  • 1. Connection & Clarity (BEING)

    One size does not fit all.

    Each person we work with has different strengths, values, experiences and brings their own unique perspective. We don’t skate across the surface. We want to really know you.

    Deepen your level of self-awareness and uncover blind spots. Be more conscious of how your attitude and level of resources impacts your approach.

    Our goal in the initial phase is to know each other more deeply.

  • 2. Capacity (DOING)

    Strengthen your foundation.

    Together we review where you are, and see how your moves support you - in business and everyday life. We’ll identify what’s working well and where there might be gaps.

    As you develop greater awareness of how your approach impacts others, together we work on how to treat yourself and others with more care.

    Our goal in this phase is to improve your capacity to work well.
